More than 100 years ago, the Sisters of Mercy responded to the healthcare needs of Des Moines and Central Iowa by founding Mercy Medical Center—Des Moines. Their mission then—of responding to needs and providing healthcare services for all in need, regardless of ability to pay—continues to guide Mercy Medical Center today.

Mercy is a leader in healthcare excellence. Featuring an exceptional cardiac team, The Iowa Heart Hospital at Mercy performs more heart procedures than any other Iowa hospital. Mercy is a premier provider of maternity and infant care. (More babies are born at Mercy—Des Moines than any other Iowa hospital.) And Mercy's Emergency Department in Des Moines holds the distinction of being Iowa's busiest, providing expert care for injury or illness.

Other areas of excellence include imaging and diagnostics, cancer care, children's services, critical care, behavioral medicine, senior services and housing, orthopedics, neurology and rehabilitation.

In February 2002, Mercy expanded many of these services to Central Iowans through the opening of Mercy Capitol. Located on the east side of Des Moines, Mercy Capitol offers a full emergency department, surgical and radiology services, and 30 inpatient beds.

Mercy provides family-centered care through 24 family practice and specialty clinics that are part of the Mercy Clinic system. In addition to Mercy Clinics, Inc., Mercy has six other wholly owned subsidiaries: Mercy College of Health Sciences, Mercy Medical Center—Centerville, Mercy Professional Practice Associates, Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Mercy Park Apartments and Mercy Foundation.
